The Detroit Handbell Ensemble (DHE) is an ambassador for the art of ringing and performing with musical excellence both within and beyond the handbell community. The DHE is dedicated to teaching and demonstrating the value of handbell ensembles in churches, schools and communities.
Organized by Susan Berry in 1991 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2006, the Detroit Handbell Ensemble is an auditioned concert choir providing both education and performance opportunities for Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio.
The ensemble, comprised of musicians, educators, engineers and business professionals from across southeastern Michigan, performs for a variety of audiences and has a strong and unique tradition of blending performance and education in its concerts. In addition to its Annual Christmas Bellfest, DHE has performed at the 2000 AGEHR Director's Conference, AGEHR Area V Conference (2003), Detroit's Noel Night, and regional and national gatherings of the United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and has recorded demo CDs for Lorenz Publishing Company.
Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Michael Burkhardt, the ensemble has become known for both its creative and innovative programming and artistic expression. As part of its dedication to encouraging handbell ringing in churches, schools, and communities, DHE is a proud sponsor of hearts, hands and voices Worship and Fine Arts Program for children in grades 2-8.
Performing on five plus octaves of Malmark handbells and five octaves of Malmark Choirchimes®, DHE is established as an ensemble of musical excellence.Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30650 Six Mile Road (between Merriman and Middlebelt) - on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:30 p.m.
